learn

this young coyote was enticed out into the open by the honking of a nearby domestic goose, which he is looking at through a fence. The animals are guarded by an (inattentive) pyrean and a tall fence but must look mighty tempting to a skinny canine.
I have to say that the birding groups looking for the American woodcock are growing on me. I learnt a lot today in a few minutes by being constantly corrected about the small birds that live in the ditch and that I never knew about.
this is a wilsons snipe. Unlike many groups from outside corrales, birders are calm, quiet, friendly (mostly), and don't litter (fishermen, I'm looking at you). Turns out there is a whole variety of birds with long beaks hunting earthworms from little burrows in the side of clear ditch.this is a virginia rail. These birds are well camoflaged and shy. A whole world just unfolded in front of my eyes in just a few minutes. This is defintely a niche habitat I have to learn more about. Thanks birders!
this is another green winged teal, the coloring is spectacular. Ducks are so much easier to photograph for this newbie.
this is a thrush, called an America robin because it looks like a larger version of the English robin, but it not very closely related. They have tons of personality. This one is getting a quick drink and a preening prior to a busy day or advertising for mates and territory. The air is becoming filled with bird song as the average temperature increases.Towhees are very common in the bushes and colorful.Today was a very busy day in the bosque, not a lot of peace and quiet. Even without the pandemic there is just so many users trying to use the public space at the same time. Runners and bikers are squeezed onto the narrow bosque trails. The lateral ditch is full of dog walkers. The clear ditch has a horde of bird watchers with subarus parked on nearby access roads. The levee trail was also busy with a large herd of horse riders. Their trailers where parked along Andrews. It is pretty amazing how well everyone is getting along...so far.
